A mainstay of the Canadian Folk and Jazz scene for well over a decade, Martin van de Ven is a former member of the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band and a frequent performer and instructor at festivals around the world. A unique stylist, Martin brings fire, elegance and humour to his performances with his current bands, Beyond the Pale and his duo project with guitarist Brian Katz, “Collected Stories”.
His original compositions carve new musical territory, rooted in traditional folk styles but informed by Jazz, Classical, and New Music.
He has published two instructional volumes of klezmer music transcriptions and has composed and performed music for many film, television, theatre, and dance productions. Martin is a graduate of Queens University (M.Mus).
With Jumblies, Martin has been Composer and Music Director for Twisted Metal and Mermaid’s Tears, Oy Di Velt Vet Vern Yinger and the workshop phase of Like An Old Tale; clarinetist for The Magic Fish and Like An Old Tale; and workshop facilitator on many projects for people of all ages and musical backgrounds and abilities.
