MABELLEarts in CONTACT FESTIVAL

MABELLEarts and Montgomery’s Inn present: Night Walk, Sunday May 1st to June 30th Montgomery’s Inn, 4709 Dundas Street W.

As part of this year’s Scotia Bank CONTACT photography festival MABELLEarts has playfully inhabited the Montgomery’s Inn tearoom with images of a community-based light mapping. Also on display is a photographic history of the Mabelle neighbourhood – Finding Mabelle – including documentation of Jumblies Theatre and MABELLEarts local projects, side by side with early 20th Century settler images.

Artists and photographers include Elinor Whidden, Katherine Fleitas, Leah Houston, Alexandra Draghici, Miriam Ahmed, Dimitri Martinovic, Marianne Alas, Public Displays of Affection and residents of the MABELLE community. ‘Finding Mabelle’ is curated by Catherine Campbell.

Music Symposium Last Call

Our Music Creation & Community Arts Symposium is coming up this Saturday April 16th, and there is still space. Here’s the exciting program:

12:30 to 1:00 – Arrivals, refreshments (be ready to start promptly at 1:00)

1:00 to 1:20 – Intro. by Jumblies & Raucous Caucus members (Ruth Howard, David Anderson &  Anne Barber)

1:20 to 1:40 – Juliet Palmer – presentation on her interdisciplinary/musical projects

2:00 to 3:30 – Composer’s panel: Wende Bartley, Chris Wilson, Martin van de Ven & other music creator’s present, followed by discussion.

3:30 to 3:45 – Break

3:45 to 5:00 – Choice of workshops:

1.     Earth Sounding Walk in Cedar Ridge grounds & ravine, with Wende Bartley.

2.     Explorations of vocal worlds & music for Jumblies Scarborough Winter’s Tale, with Juliet Palmer.

3.     Experimental responses to Jumblies’ Evolving Gallery installation with Martin van de Ven and Chris Wilson.

5:00 to 5:30 – Responses from workshops.

5:30 to 7:00 – Dinner & Informal Conversations

7:00 to 9:00 – Performance Showcase

(with brief artist explanations, questions & answers):

-   Presentations from afternoon workshops;

-   Eric Schwindt & the Parkdale Singers: performing 4 songs from It Happened In My Apartment (lyrics by Arts4All Participants & Liz Rucker) and Exit Pursued by A Bear (from Jumblies 2010, Like An Old Tale);

-    Train Song Ballad, by Scarborough Tamil Seniors, Julia Churchill & Beth Helmers & I Love to Dance, verbatim text by Mabelle senior, Jean Field, set to music and sung by Julia Churchill;

-     From their Voices, workshop performance of a commissioned piece by Adam Scime, scored for Solo Singer (Julia Churchill), Cello (Sonya Nanos), Community Voices and Tape;

-     Audio recording of Being Margolia, commissioned and performed by the Toronto Children’s Chorus in June 2010, score by Martin van de Ven, libretto by Ruth Howard;

-     Screening of Winter Comes & Spring Is Here, by Sean Frey, with original musical soundtrack by Martin van de Ven.
