Remembering Hawa Jibril

Hawa Jibril (1920 – 2011), beloved Somali poet, who lived in Toronto in her later years and whose life and poetry (as shared and translated by her daughter Faduma Ahmed Alim) inspired Jumblies’ 2007 production of Bridge of One Hair, and whose book of poetry was publishd by Jumblies Press in 2008, is featured on the blog of Jumblies’ friends at COPA, as part of a series of portraits for African History Month.

Welcome to Robin and Sarah!

This December, we were thrilled to welcome two accomplished artists to join Jumblies as professional interns:

Robin Sutherland, based in Sault Ste Marie and developing her own Northern Ontario youth projects, will be working with us for several months thanks to a Theatre Ontario PTTP grant.

Sarah Miller , bringing a wealth of experience in sound and documentary arts, is joining us for a full year, thanks to a George Cedric Metcalf Foundation Performing Arts Internship grant.

We are very grateful to these two funding organizations who have enabled many former internships with Jumblies as well as supporting many years of learning and mentorship for the whole  Toronto performing arts world.

Tea Cups on the loose in North Bay

I’ve just returned this evening from North Bay and Nipissing First Nation, having spent a wonderful week with the Whitewater Gallery and Aanmitaagzi Storymakers, as the first phase of my North Bay Residency (thanks to the Ontario Arts Council’s Artist in the Community/Workplace Program). The artistic team for the week included: from Jumblies, Sasha Mattock and Robin Sutherland (a Theatre Ontario’s PTTP intern)  and Sherry Guppy and Nimikii Couchie from Aanmitaagzi. Also collaborating and supporting were the Artistic Directors and staff of Aanmitaagzi (Penny Couchie and Sid Bobb) and the White Water Gallery (Clayton Windott and Robin Pollex). Clayton and I also visited with Carrie James, of the North Bay Public Library to conduct publicity and discuss plans for the next stage of the project (slated for September 2013).

The theme of the “micro-residency” was ‘The Four Lands of Nipissing – Goodland, Badland, Lostland and Dreamland’. During the week, we ran 4 workshops at Big Medicine Studio, animated the White Water for two days with an evolving installation and closed with aWinter Solstice celebration at Big Medicine Studio. Over 60 people of all ages and varied backgrounds contributed to the artmaking. To entice local people to take part, we planted tea cups around the town with invitations to drop by the gallery. Of about 80 tea cups planted, 8 were returned, with the others remaining out in the world.
